Durga Pooja (Dashahara)

 

As the light fortnight begins in the month of Ashvina (September-October) the fall Navratri. The nine nights of Goddess Durga starts, so it is called Durga Pooja. In this festival large image of Goddess Durga installed in pandals (canopies) at more than 1000 places in Varanasi and open for public worship. Each of the nine days devotees visit in the pandal. 10th days of fortnight is called Vijaya Dashami or Dashahara.  On this day images of Goddess Durga taken out in procession to the Ganga River.
