This temple is known as Mokshadayini (giver of salvation). The main objective of this Jyotirling is to provide salvation to the devotees. It is a center of huge faith for the hindus. The present temple was constructed in 1789 by the queen of Indore, Ahilya Bai. There are three peaks on the temple in which peaks of Lord Vishwanath and Vaikunthnath were golden by Maharaja Ranjeet Singh in 1839. He had provided 22 and quarter monds of gold to golden the peak. There is a Naubatkhana (inn) just before the temple that was constructed by then district magistrate Ibrahim Khan on the order of then governor general Waren Hestings. Unfortunately in the month of December 1982, there happened a theft in the temple and so the temple was taken under the control by the state government on 28 Jan 1983. Since then the management of the temple is taken care of by the trust ‘Shri Kashi Vishwanath Mandir Trust’. The late former king of Banaras State (Varanasi) Dr. Vibhuti Narayan Singh till the end of his life 25th Dec 2000 remained the chairman of the committee. Thereafter the commissioner of Varanasi took up the responsibility of presiding over the chairmanship. There are 15 members including chairman in the trust committee. On the Shavani Mondays, Annakut of Dipawali, 56 items of edibles are offered to Lord Shiva. On Rangbhari Ekadashi devotees of Lord Shiva play with colours and gulal. At dawn 3:45 AM for Mangala Aarati the gate is opened for the devotees and sharp at 11:00 PM the Sayan Aarati is done and thereafter the temple is closed. From the nearby platform of Lord Shiva, Gyanwapi Mosque is clearly visible. In past this mosque was really the temple known as Vishweshwar. It is believed that Qutub-ud-din  Aibak destroyed the temple in 1194 During the reign of Razia Sultan “1236-1240” had built a mosque on deserted site of the temple.
